Get Blogging!

I can’t say enough good things about blogging as a way for us writing mommies to sharpen our pencils, so to speak. Type, click, insta-publishing for the whole wide world to read.
That being said, I also can’t say enough about placing limits on what you blog and defining the purpose of your blog before you jump in, teeth gnashing, ranting and raving about your life. See my post, Build-a-Blog Workshop, for more on what to do before you blog.
Now that you’ve decided to start your own blog, you need to find a blogging platform. Here’s some top providers:
There are countless other platforms; Google “free blog” and you’ll find more than you can imagine. I’m just listing these biggies because they’re very user friendly and chock full of tips, info, and forums to help you build a great blog.
Ok, so you’ve opened an account at one of these fine services (all wonderful, all different), now it’s time to think about what you as a writer want to blog. This is the beauty of blogging! You can put together an informational blog blended with a personal blog (wow! just like this one!); a purely informational blog; blog breaking news or commentary on news/politics; blog a weekly or daily humor/sports/cooking/gardening/etc column; even blog your fiction or a whole NOVEL!
If you want to use your blog as a professional development tool, treat it professionally. This is paramount! Take pride in your work: create daily or weekly deadlines for yourself; write valuable content, not just meanderings and rants about your day; be sure your writing is top-notch.
Once you have a blog you feel is worth the click, promote your blog to family and friends. This means you’ll need to spend some time building it: adding posts; defining categories and pages; creating a blogroll or blogrolls that add value to the content you offer. No one wants to eat a half-cooked turkey on Thanksgiving Day - be sure you’ve got a good blog, content and appearance-wise, before you start tooting your own horn.
The best part of blogging is that your blog is instant publication for YOU. Stop bemoaning your lack of publication credits and start a blog. Make it to reflect your passion(s) and you’ll have a great collection of writing before long, one to which you can point prospective editors, publishers, and agents and say, “See, I’m darn serious about this writing gig!”
